The Five Dimensions of Trust
Trust is at the very heart of every working or personal relationship. If trust is high, almost any obstacle can be overcome. If it is low, most issues are almost impossible to overcome. When trust is low, there is an enormous drain on people’s emotions and productivity. Here are some things to consider:
- Credibility – The trustworthiness and competence of management/others, open and accessible communication
- Respect – Recognition of a person’s worth and contribution. Appreciating each other’s strengths
- Fairness – Equitable sharing of opportunities and rewards, no favouritism
- Pride – In personal efforts and results; in the team’s efforts and results
- Camaraderie – Friendliness and community feeling, a sense of belonging
To rebuild trust you need to start by being trustworthy. Do what you say you will do. Share yourself honestly, admit your shortcomings. Don’t ask others to trust you more than you trust them. Tell the truth.
Your challenge: Meet with others in your team and have an open dialogue about the 5 elements of trust – where do you need to focus in order to build rebuild trust?
